Tell me about the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.

Baba Zaman

Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan envisioned the mosque as a meeting place between Islamic traditions — not the work of a single school. Inside you'll find Moroccan zellige tilework set beside the world's largest hand-knotted Persian carpet, Ottoman calligraphy framing Mughal arches, and a chandelier from Munich hanging above an Emirati prayer hall. It opened in 2007, three years after his death; he is buried at the eastern courtyard.

What should I know before going inside?

Baba Zaman

Modest dress is required: shoulders and knees covered for everyone, hair covered for women. The mosque lends abayas without charge at the main entrance — there is no need to bring one. Enter through the underground passage from the visitor centre on the Wahat Al Karama side; arriving for the first prayer after sunrise (around 5:45 in summer) means you'll have the courtyard almost to yourself. Photography is welcome, but lower your voice once you're inside the prayer hall, and never photograph worshippers in prostration.
